Beppu’s renowned hot springs are so numerous that you may see plumes of mist rising from the city as you approach. Resort spas and public baths offer opportunities to soak in the soothing waters, often with views of the surrounding mountains or coastline. Bathing in mud, sand or steam warmed by the geothermal heat is also a relaxing, rejuvenating pastime. While the city’s most famous springs are too hot for bathing, they certainly merit a visit. Known collectively as Beppu’s “Hells” because of their surreal, otherworldly appearance, each spring in this series has uniquely distinct characteristics, from vivid cobalt waters to a striking red hue to eerily gurgling gray mud. The town also has places to learn the local culinary tradition of harnessing the natural steam to prepare food. Beyond the springs, Beppu has a picturesque city park, an observation tower with panoramic vistas, and a cable car that will transport you to the summit of Mount Tsurumi for yet another perspective on the scenery.
